Physical Education

Physical Education at Yattendon School

Intent

At Yattendon School, we believe that Physical Education plays a vital role in supporting pupils' physical, social and emotional development. Through our PE curriculum, we aim to inspire all children to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, recognising the importance of leading healthy, active lifestyles.

Our PE curriculum reflects Yattendon's Shared Vision by providing rich learning experiences that enable children to challenge themselves, build confidence and achieve their full potential. Through the Get Set 4 PE scheme, pupils develop a broad range of physical skills, knowledge and understanding across a variety of sports, games and physical activities. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that all children experience success, regardless of their starting point, and develop the resilience and determination that underpin the school's commitment to helping pupils persevere, overcome challenges and achieve.

PE contributes strongly to Yattendon's focus on developing the whole child. Alongside physical competence, pupils learn important life skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, self-discipline and respect. The curriculum actively promotes the school's core values of Appreciation, Kindness, Courage, Honesty, Responsibility and Co-operation, encouraging children to work collaboratively, support one another and demonstrate good sportsmanship. Respect for others, fairness and inclusion are embedded throughout all aspects of PE.

Our PE curriculum also supports the development of Yattendon's Learning Powers. Through physical challenges, pupils learn to solve problems, concentrate, share ideas and reflect on their performance, helping them become adaptable, independent and lifelong learners.

Our PE Curriculum Aims

At Yattendon School, we aim to:

  • Develop pupils' competence and confidence across a wide range of physical activities.
  • Promote healthy, active lifestyles and positive attitudes towards physical activity.
  • Enable pupils to build resilience, perseverance and self-belief through challenge and success.

  • Develop teamwork, leadership and communication skills.

  • Foster enjoyment, participation and a lifelong engagement in sport and physical activity.

  • Encourage children to compete with determination while demonstrating fairness and respect.

  • Support pupils' physical, social, emotional and mental wellbeing.

  • Prepare pupils to lead healthy and active lives beyond primary school.

Implementation

How PE is Taught

At Yattendon School, PE is delivered through the Get Set 4 PE scheme, which provides a clear and progressive curriculum that develops skills, knowledge and understanding from Year 3 to Year 6.

Lessons are carefully sequenced to ensure children build upon prior learning and develop increasing competence across a broad range of activities, including:

  • Invasion games

  • Net and wall games

  • Striking and fielding games

  • Athletics

  • Dance

  • Gymnastics

  • Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

  • Fitness

  • Swimming

Each unit develops both physical skills and wider personal skills, creating opportunities for pupils to evaluate, improve and celebrate their performance.

Lessons typically include:

Review Prior Learning → Skill Development → Application → Reflection

Children are encouraged to practise, refine and apply skills in increasingly challenging contexts. Teachers use modelling, questioning, guided practice and constructive feedback to support progress and ensure all pupils are challenged appropriately.

In line with Yattendon's commitment to rich learning experiences, pupils are given opportunities to participate in competitive sport, festivals, enrichment activities and inter-school events. These experiences help children develop confidence, teamwork and a sense of belonging while fostering enjoyment of physical activity.

The curriculum is fully inclusive and adaptive, ensuring every child can access learning and experience success. Activities are modified where appropriate to support individual needs while maintaining high expectations for all learners.

Throughout PE, children are encouraged to demonstrate the school's values and Learning Powers by:

  • Working cooperatively with others.

  • Taking responsibility for their own improvement.

  • Showing courage when attempting new skills.

  • Reflecting on strengths and areas for development.

  • Persevering when faced with challenge.

  • Respecting rules, officials, teammates and opponents.

Impact

Through our PE curriculum, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to lead healthy, active and fulfilling lives.

Children leave Yattendon School as physically literate learners who:

  • Participate confidently in a wide range of physical activities.

  • Demonstrate competence in fundamental movement and sport-specific skills.

  • Understand the importance of physical activity for physical and mental wellbeing.

  • Show resilience, perseverance and determination when challenged.

  • Work effectively as part of a team and demonstrate leadership when appropriate.

  • Compete fairly and respectfully, displaying strong sportsmanship.

  • Reflect on their performance and use feedback to improve.

  • Understand how healthy choices contribute to lifelong wellbeing.

The impact of our PE curriculum can be seen not only in children's physical development but also in their confidence, character and attitudes towards learning. Pupils leave Yattendon with the motivation, independence and positive mindset reflected in the school's vision and the 'Y Factor', understanding that effort, perseverance and determination are key to success both in sport and in life.
