At Yattendon School we believe that health and physical activity is important in promoting lifelong values. Yattendon School does this by providing a range of opportunities for all of its pupils to participate in curriculum PE and school sports clubs. We value the benefit it brings to children’s self-confidence and well-being.

The PE curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

In PE, pupils are taught to:

  • use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
  • play competitive games and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
  • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance
  • perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
  • compare their performances

Physical Education at Yattendon

At Yattendon we deliver two hours of PE each week.

Children have one hour of PE each week, supported by Visionary Sports Academy (VSA) coaches.  VSA put their coaching philosophy at the forefront of everything, collaborating with Yattendon teachers to teach a range of sports such as handball, hockey and cricket.  At Yattendon, we prioritise individual development before the importance of winning. PE sessions look to replicate the intensity of a real game, but is played without the fear of failure.

The second hour of PE is led by class teachers.  These sessions include dance, gymnastics, yoga and physical fitness.

Swimming

All schools must provide swimming instruction. Pupils are taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

At Yattendon School, all children in Years 3 & 4 undertake a block of 10 swimming lessons at the local swimming pool.

Sports Tournaments

Children can try out to take part in a number of sports tournaments throughout the year.  These may include:

  • Girls & Boys football
  • Hockey
  • Netball Cross Country
  • Rounders

In the summer term, a team of our most able athletes are selected to compete at District Sports at K2, Crawley.

Sports Crew

Each year, 12 children across year 5 & 6 are selected to become members of our Sports Crew.  These children are nominated by class teachers for their leadership abilities and are role models for sporting behaviour at our school.

The sports crew help at many of our sporting events and can earn their bronze, silver and gold awards for their leadership skills.
